Uganda declared an Ebola outbreak on 15 May 2026 after cases were imported from the DR Congo, and several countries introduced precautionary entry restrictions on arrivals from Uganda — the UAE suspended visas for arrivals from Uganda, the DR Congo and South Sudan from 6 June 2026. Uganda declared the outbreak contained on 5 July 2026 and asked for the restrictions to be lifted. Requirements on this route may have changed since we last checked, and some states are reviewing their rules week by week.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Get yellow fever vaccination

    If not vaccinated, get your yellow fever vaccine at UVRI in Entebbe or Mulago Hospital in Kampala. The International Certificate of Vaccination (yellow card) activates 10 days after vaccination. Budget time for this before applying.

  2. Check which Schengen country to apply to

    Apply to the consulate of the country where you'll spend the most days. If visiting multiple Schengen countries equally, apply to your first port of entry. For Germany-focused trips, apply at VFS Global Kampala for Germany.

  3. Download and complete the application form

    Download the Schengen visa application form from kampala.diplo.de. Fill it in carefully and sign. Do not leave fields blank — write 'N/A' if not applicable.

  4. Obtain Schengen travel insurance

    Purchase Schengen travel insurance covering all Schengen countries, minimum €30,000 medical coverage, for the full trip duration. Look for insurers that specifically offer Schengen-approved cover for Ugandan travellers.

  5. Gather all supporting documents

    Collect bank statements (3–6 months), employment letter, return flight itinerary, hotel bookings, 2 passport photos, insurance certificate, and yellow fever card.

  6. Book VFS Global Kampala appointment

    Go to vfsglobal.com/germany/uganda and book an in-person appointment. Bring all original documents plus photocopies to the appointment.

  7. Submit at VFS Global and wait

    Attend your appointment, pay the €90 visa fee and VFS service fee. Biometrics (fingerprints) are taken. Your application is forwarded to the German Embassy. Processing is typically 15 calendar days.

  • Confirmed return flight itinerary Booking showing entry and exit from the Schengen Area.
  • Accommodation proof for full stay Hotel bookings for all nights, or an invitation letter from a host in Germany with their address and legal status in the Schengen Area.
  • Bank statements (last 3–6 months) Must demonstrate sufficient funds. Minimum guideline: €100–€500 per day of stay. Regular salary credits and consistent balance are important.
  • Employment letter Confirms position, monthly salary, approved leave dates, and employment continuity after return. Self-employed: URSB certificate, audited accounts, and business bank statements.
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate — MANDATORY Germany and all Schengen countries require proof of yellow fever vaccination from travellers arriving from Uganda (an endemic country). Biometric registration has replaced the passport stamp at Schengen borders

The EU Entry/Exit System started progressively on 12 October 2025 and became fully operational on 10 April 2026. At every external border of the 29 Schengen states, a non-EU traveller's fingerprints and facial image are now recorded along with the passport details and the date and place of entry, and passports are no longer stamped. It applies to holders of a Schengen visa as well as to visa-exempt travellers. There is nothing to apply for and nothing to pay — registration happens at the booth — but the first crossing after 10 April 2026 takes noticeably longer, and the 90-days-in-180 allowance is now counted automatically rather than reconstructed from stamps. Do not confuse this with ETIAS: that is a separate scheme for travellers who need no visa, it does not apply to a passport that requires a Schengen visa, and its launch has slipped past 2026. Sites selling ETIAS to visa nationals are selling nothing.
