Entry rules for travellers from Uganda are changing — verify before you fly

Uganda declared an Ebola outbreak on 15 May 2026 after cases were imported from the DR Congo, and several countries introduced precautionary entry restrictions on arrivals from Uganda — the UAE suspended visas for arrivals from Uganda, the DR Congo and South Sudan from 6 June 2026. Uganda declared the outbreak contained on 5 July 2026 and asked for the restrictions to be lifted. Requirements on this route may have changed since we last checked, and some states are reviewing their rules week by week.

Benin is one of West Africa's most culturally rich destinations — home to the Dahomey Kingdom, the Voodoo religion, the slave-trade history at Ouidah and the UNESCO royal palaces of Abomey, and the stilt village of Ganvié. Benin admits every African Union citizen without a visa for 90 days, so there is no e-visa to buy and nothing to pay at the border. The yellow fever certificate is mandatory and is checked. Ethiopian Airlines flies Entebbe–Addis–Cotonou.

  1. Check your passport has six months' validity

    Six months beyond your intended stay, with a blank page for the entry stamp. There is no visa to apply for — Benin admits Ugandans without one — so the passport is the document that decides whether you travel.

  2. Carry the original yellow fever certificate

    The card must be at least 10 days old before travel and the original is required — photocopies and phone photos are not reliably accepted. This is the document most likely to stop you, not the absence of a visa.

  3. Have onward travel and accommodation to hand

    Immigration routinely asks visa-free arrivals for a confirmed return or onward ticket and a first night's booking. Keep both reachable on your phone rather than describing them.

  4. Clear immigration for up to 90 days

    The officer sets the permitted stay, up to 90 days, and prints it on the entry stamp. Check it before leaving the counter — the stamp, not the published allowance, is what governs your stay.

Benin opened visa-free entry to citizens of every African Union member state on 30 August 2016, following Rwanda. It is a continent-wide exemption at 90 days, which supersedes the narrower list of eleven bilateral waivers still quoted in places — including the 30-day figure this page carried.
