Mainland Tanzania now charges the USD 44 travel insurance too

Tanzania's Ministry of Finance directed in July 2025 that foreign visitors to the mainland hold a Tanzanian inbound travel policy, and implementation began in January 2026. It costs USD 44, runs for a maximum stay of 92 days and covers emergency treatment, evacuation and repatriation, personal accident, rescue and baggage. Citizens of East African Community and SADC states are exempt, which is why this applies here and not to Kenyan, Ugandan or South African travellers. Zanzibar's separate policy, in force since October 2024, is unchanged, and travellers doing both have reported being charged for each.

Zanzibar requires USD 44 travel insurance bought before arrival

Zanzibar requires every visitor to hold inbound travel insurance, USD 44 per adult and USD 22 for children aged 2 to 17, bought before travel at visitzanzibar.go.tz. A QR code is issued and checked at immigration on arrival. It is separate from the visa and from mainland Tanzania — a Nigerian traveller flying straight to Zanzibar needs it even though nothing on the mainland leg suggests so. Only the government portal is official.
