Ghanaian passport holders need no visa for Tanzania — three months on arrival, no application and no fee. What to get right is the yellow fever certificate, which port health officers check on arrival, and the insurance: Zanzibar has charged every visitor USD 44 since October 2024, and mainland Tanzania added its own USD 44 policy in January 2026 for travellers who are not EAC or SADC nationals. Ghana is neither, so both can apply on a trip covering both.

The card must be at least 10 days old before travel and the original is required — photocopies and phone photos are not reliably accepted. This is the document most likely to stop you, not the absence of a visa.

The officer sets the permitted stay, up to 90 days, and prints it on the entry stamp. Check it before leaving the counter — the stamp, not the published allowance, is what governs your stay.
⚠️ Yellow Fever Certificate required. Ghana is classified as a yellow fever endemic country. Tanzania requires proof of yellow fever vaccination from all travellers arriving from endemic countries. Carry your original International Certificate of Vaccination (yellow card) — Tanzanian immigration may ask to see the physical card on arrival. Get vaccinated at least 10 days before travel at Noguchi Memorial Institute in Accra or another authorised centre.
Ghanaian travellers are frequently challenged on yellow fever at Tanzanian airports. Officers check physical yellow cards.
Fix: Carry the original physical certificate. Get vaccinated at an authorised Ghanaian centre (e.g. Noguchi) at least 10 days before travel.
Tanzanian immigration occasionally asks for proof of funds on arrival, particularly for solo travellers.
Fix: Have a bank statement or credit card with adequate balance accessible. $500–1,000 available is a reasonable minimum.
Travellers without confirmed accommodation details can face additional questioning.
Fix: Print or save hotel confirmation to your phone. Have the address of your first night's accommodation ready.

Mainland Tanzania now charges the USD 44 travel insurance too
Tanzania's Ministry of Finance directed in July 2025 that foreign visitors to the mainland hold a Tanzanian inbound travel policy, and implementation began in January 2026. It costs USD 44, runs for a maximum stay of 92 days and covers emergency treatment, evacuation and repatriation, personal accident, rescue and baggage. Citizens of East African Community and SADC states are exempt, which is why this applies here and not to Kenyan, Ugandan or South African travellers. Zanzibar's separate policy, in force since October 2024, is unchanged, and travellers doing both have reported being charged for each.
Zanzibar requires USD 44 travel insurance bought before arrival
Zanzibar requires every visitor to hold inbound travel insurance, USD 44 per adult and USD 22 for children aged 2 to 17, bought before travel at visitzanzibar.go.tz. A QR code is issued and checked at immigration on arrival. It is separate from the visa and from mainland Tanzania — a Ghanaian traveller flying straight to Zanzibar needs it even though nothing on the mainland leg suggests so. Only the government portal is official.
Correction: Tanzania is visa-free for Ghanaians
Ghanaian passport holders are admitted to Tanzania without a visa for up to three months. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required on arrival.
